Audiobook review “The Anger Management Workbook for Women: A 5-Step Guide to Managing Your Emotions and Breaking the Cycle of Anger.”
Why is it that when a woman gets angry, so many people have a problem with it while the stereotype of “the angry young man” is accepted?
Julie Catalano MSW LICSW has explored women’s anger in her audiobook “The Anger Management Workbook for Women: A 5-Step Guide to Managing Your Emotions and Breaking the Cycle of Anger.” It is narrated by Gabra Zackman.
Julie Catalano provides evidence-based tools to handle anger and tries to remove the taboo around women’s anger. Women often tend to feel ashamed of themselves after an angry outburst. The audiobook explores the idea that women no longer need to meet “the feminine ideal.”
The causes of anger are explored: disrespectful treatment, unjust situations and unfairness. If you swallow your anger or suppress your anger, you get psychosomatic illnesses. The author references other books like ‘Women and anger’ written in 1993 and ‘The dance of anger’ in 1985, which were groundbreaking in the field.
Stories of women’s anger are stories of hurt, distress, regret, embarrassment and shame. When women are denied power and resources, they get angry. Angry behaviour is “learned” and can be “changed”. The audiobook comes with a useful PDF file that can be downloaded. The 57-page PDF has self-assessment quizzes and offers strategies to help women handle anger.
The author outlines the FADE framework in the PDF. F-feel- Imagine how you will feel both physically and emotionally if you were to manage anger better.
Appear- Imagine how you may appear differently to others if you were able to manage anger better. Do- Imagine what you would do differently if you were able to manage anger better. And Empower- Imagine what you would be empowered to do if you were able to manage anger better.
I recommend this audiobook to every woman who has ever had an angry outburst and even men, so that they understand what makes a woman angry.
